Sharpsburg VFW free veterans dinner set

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review - 10/21/2019

Oct. 21--Members of the Sharpsburg VFW will tip their cap to peers from across the Alle-Kiski Valley with a free dinner on Nov. 10.

"We just want to pay tribute," member Len Colaizzi said of the third annual event.

Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. at Post 709, 1017 Main Street.

Doors open at 5 p.m. Each veteran is invited to bring one guest.

"This is a time to bond with your fellow service members and share your experience with them," Commander Pat Corcoran said. "My whole focus is vets serving vets."

Corcoran said that last year, the storytelling group Veterans Breakfast Club attended and spurred a lot of tales from time in service.

"This year, we'll go around and ask questions and try to hear more stories, because that was pretty nice, hearing from our peers," Corcoran said.

Past events have drawn about 50 guests.

Corcoran said live music will accompany a homemade dinner by the VFW Auxiliary, with a menu that might include beef stroganoff, chicken and pasta salad.

As in the past, Corcoran will set a small table with a single place-setting, one rose and a red ribbon. The table includes an inverted glass because "they can't toast with us," Colaizzi said.

"This table occupies a place of dignity and honor," Corcoran said. "It symbolizes the fact that members are missing from our ranks, so we join together to pay humble tribute to them."

To reserve a seat, call 412-626-0413 or 412-781-7771. Leave a message to be added to the list.
