LMS invites veterans to Veterans Day programs

The Lebanon Reporter - 11/6/2019

Nov. 6--Lebanon Middle School is seeking veterans to honor on Veterans Day. Social studies teacher Don Polston said the school will hold convocations at 8, 8:55 and 9:50 a.m. for each grade on Monday.

"It's always difficult to get veterans to come on Veterans Day because they have so many other commitments," Polston said. "We want to give any veteran the opportunity who wants to come to one of those to know that they're welcome."

Seating, however, is limited so Polston asks that interested veterans contact him by emailing to polstond@leb.k12.in.us or by calling the school office at 765-482-3400. Veterans may pick any program they wish, as long as there is enough seating.

The programs are the same, and they are all student led. The program has videos, patriotic music from students and student essays. The entrance to the school will be adorned with flags.

Polston said the students have no obvious connection to the United States military. Even 9-11 is ancient history because today's students were born after that event.

"A lot of them want to talk about people who fought and people who died," Polston said. "Their essay was 'The Price of Freedom.' I ask them, 'What did you do to get your freedom?'"

Polston gets the students to see they didn't do anything to get their freedom. It was veterans who came before them -- from the Revolutionary War to active duty personnel -- who made that possible.

Unlike major wars, like World War II, very few people today have a direct connection to the military, Polston said.

"We'd like to pay our respects to the people who do," Polston added. "We would really like to get as many veterans who would like to come and see what the kids are doing for Veterans Day."
