Lewis County veterans groups to perform at 19 cemeteries and parade Memorial Day Weekend

May 23--LOWVILLE -- Three groups will be working together to honor veterans at 19 cemeteries this weekend. The procession will culminate into a Memorial Day parade Monday at 11 a.m. through the village.

"Memorial Day stands alone as the only day that honors those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. It is the day we put aside to remember fallen heroes and to pray that our current wars will stop taking the lives of these brave heroes," Legion Post Commander Lee Hinkleman said.

The joint American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Marine CorpsLeague Honor Guard will provide full military honors to veterans buried in each local cemetery. They invite all family and community members to attend.

The Honor Guard will leave at noon Sunday from the American Legion, 5383 Dayan St. It will perform honors at 12:30 p.m. in Brantingham, at 1:30 p.m. in Sperry­ville, at 1:45 p.m. at Petries Corners, at 2 p.m. at Beaches Bridge, at 2:20 p.m. at Old Glendale, at 2:30 p.m. at Martinsburg, at 2:45 p.m. at West Martinsburg, at 3 p.m. at West Lowville, at 3:20 p.m. at Fairview, Vary Road, at 3:30 p.m. at Swinburne, Roberts Road and at 3:45 p.m. at Hillside, Route 26.

The team will then depart from the post again at 7:30 a.m. on Monday to honor more veterans who have been laid to rest. It will perform honors at 7:45 a.m at Wilcox Road near the sales barn, at 8 a.m. at the Reed cemetery, at 8 a.m. at Phinney Road, at 8:15 a.m. at Lee Lumber, East Road, at 8:25 a.m. at East State Street, at 8:35 a.m. at River Street, at 8:45 a.m. at Jackson Street, at 8:50 a.m. at Upper Stowe Street and at 9 a.m. at Lowville Rural.

Veterans of the community and the military honor guard will then parade through the village of Lowville starting at 11 a.m. Monday.

"People are encouraged to line the streets in honor and out of respect to the fallen," Mr. Hinkleman said.

After speeches, honors to the deceased will be rendered at Veterans Park. Food will be available and meals will be delivered to homebound veterans in the community. All donations are welcome leading up to the event.

The Legion's newly opened museum honoring local veterans will also be open to the public Monday. Members welcome assistance from the community to identify the personnel in donated photographs.

In the event of rain, the parade will still be held and spectators are encouraged to watch from their cars. The speeches, ceremony, food and band will be moved inside the firehouse.
