HAL Basic Home Control System is an environmental control unit program designed for use by individuals with severe physical disabilities, spinal cord injury, and upper extremity disabilities. It allows the user to control lighting, appliances, and other devices through a computer with voice input, which is received by the computer via microphone. Lighting and appliances can be turned on and off by voice command, or the user can set schedules by voice. When commands are carried out, the program provides voice confirmation. The software also enables users to get information from the Internet and to receive and send e-mail by voice. The number of devices that can be controlled with this software is limited; for a program that can control an unlimited number of devices, see separate entry for HAL 2000. OPTIONS: HALvoices add-on replaces computer voices with human-sounding voices. COMPATIBLITY: For use on IBM and compatible computers. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: 1 GigaHertz (GHz) or faster processor; Windows 98/Me/XP/2000 operating system, XP/2000 recommended; 1 gigabyte (GB) random access memory (RAM); 40 megabytes (MB) free disk space for installation, 60 MB for normal use; multimedia PC with microphone, speakers, and sound card.
