'Show your gratitude': Victorville seeks parade entrants, info on local veterans for milestone Veterans Day Parade & Ceremony

Daily Press - 9/4/2021

Sep. 5—Victorville officials are seeking parade entrants and information about local veterans they hope to honor during the city's milestone 25th annual Veterans Day Parade & Ceremony in November.

On Friday, the city said its veteran information form and parade application are available at VictorvilleCA.gov/VeteransDay. The submission deadline is Oct. 22.

In a statement, Mayor Debra Jones said Victorville has a long tradition of "bringing our community together to honor our military Veterans for their selfless service and personal courage."

"This November marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of our Veterans Day Celebration," Jones said. "With our community's help, we hope to make this year's event the best one yet. Come out and march in our parade, tell us about a Veteran you know, and show your gratitude."

Information obtained on Victorville veterans will be included in a tribute to them, which is part of the tradition Jones referenced in her statement. The city is looking for information on "current and past military Veterans with any length of service that is active duty; reserve component; or National Guard with any U.S. military branch."

The city's Veterans Day Celebration is scheduled at the corner of Seventh Street and Forrest Avenue — the site of the Old Town Victorville Veterans Memorial.

Erected in 1996, the memorial honors Victorville's military service members who died in service to the United States, and it includes a poem entitled, "We Remember," written by former Victorville City Council member Felix Diaz.

Inscribed on the memorial are names both recognizable and lesser-known, including Kemper Campbell (the namesake of Kemper Campbell Ranch) and Harry A. "Babe" Sellman Jr., who lost their lives during World War II.

The event will start at 8:45 a.m.Nov. 11 with the annual Freedom Mile Run. The Veterans Day Parade will follow at 9 a.m., beginning at the corner of Seventh and Tracy streets before proceeding nearly half a mile north to Seventh Street and Forrest Avenue.

The city's Veterans Day ceremony will then take place there, immediately after the parade ends.

Questions about the parade or how to submit veteran information can be directed to Victorville spokesperson Sue Jones by phone at 760-955-5028 or by email at VictorvilleVeteran@Victorvilleca.gov.
